Costa Express pioneer unveils new digital-first automated coffee concept

Dubai, 2 September 2025 (Qahwa World) – Scott Martin, the entrepreneur behind the UK’s self-serve coffee breakthrough, is making a strong comeback with the launch of Unity Coffee, a digital-first concept designed to reshape the coffee-to-go experience.

The new brand is set to debut this month across retail and travel hubs in the United Kingdom. Unlike traditional self-serve models, Unity Coffee integrates intelligent automation with a mobile-first platform, allowing consumers to order and pay directly through an app. The system also introduces agile pricing, instant promotions, and personalized loyalty rewards to create a more engaging and value-driven customer journey.

“Our goal is to change the way people think about coffee-to-go,” said Martin. “For too long, customers have faced high prices and repetitive experiences. Unity Coffee is about delivering premium coffee at fairer prices through smart technology and giving control back to the consumer.”

The company is targeting the installation of more than 500 self-serve units within the next two years, positioning itself as a serious challenger in a market long dominated by traditional operators.

Martin brings deep expertise to the project. In 1998, he co-founded Coffee Nation, which quickly grew to nearly 900 machines and held 45% of the UK market. The business was acquired by Costa Coffee in 2011 for £59.5 million ($77.3 million) and later rebranded as Costa Express. Under Martin’s leadership, Costa Express expanded rapidly and became part of Coca-Cola’s £3.9 billion ($5.4 billion) takeover of Costa Coffee in 2019.

Backed by investors with strong backgrounds in manufacturing, packaging, and private equity, Unity Coffee enters the market with significant financial and strategic support. Martin himself continues to advise leading companies, including UK specialty group Grind, automated solutions provider BoxBar, and Singapore-based Crown Digital, the developer of the robotic barista concept ELLA.

With Unity Coffee, Martin is once again at the forefront of innovation, pledging to reshape the self-serve coffee landscape and challenge the established order with a smarter, more consumer-focused model.
